Our Process

Below you will find a comprehensive breakdown of our residential and commercial trim and wainscoting process. We believe consistency and attention to detail are the most important factors in completing an amazing project, so we want to give you a window into how we ensure both factors are met at a high level!

Before any work is done, we will lay down drop cloths and move or cover nearby furniture. Depending on the work being done, we will give the project surface a quick wipe down, if needed.

Before we begin installation, we will prep the project surfaces. This includes removing any existing trim, moulding, or wainscoting. If you are also painting the walls, we will complete that first, as it will be much more time efficient to do so.

First, we will paint our project surfaces before installing. This allows us a more efficient way to paint as we don’t have to focus on avoiding paint on the floors and the walls. Once the paint dries, we will install the project surfaces according to manufacturer instructions and building codes.

After the project surfaces are installed, we will go around and use a filler to patch the nail holes and use a filler or caulk to fill in any gaps around the walls or floor. This will provide a uniform finish and completely conceal the nails from view. We will do a light sanding, and using the same paint, will perform touch ups on the patched areas to produce a uniform color. Because we already painted the project surfaces beforehand, the rest of the project surfaces do not need to be painted. We will do a final inspection to ensure all surfaces are clean and uniform.

Our work is complete! Before we remove the preparation work, we will walk the project with you to ensure that you are satisfied with our work, and cover some best practices with you on how to maximize the life of your paint and your new trim, crown moulding, or wainscoting.

After the final walkthrough, we will remove all of our prep work, and do a final wipe down and vacuum of the project area. Much like the U.S Forestry Service, we practice a “leave no trace” approach to our job sites. We will ensure that we leave your home without any evidence we were even there, except for the beautifully transformed space, of course!

Frequently Asked Questions

The exact origin of the word is still up for debate. Many think it comes from the German word for ‘wall paneling’. Others think it’s name originated from the tree where the paneling originally came from, called the ‘wainscoting oak’. Either way, it is one of the most amazing tools we can use to transform a room’s look and feel!

There are several types of wainscoting out there, ranging from simplistic to very intricate. The four most popular types of wainscoting are as follows: raised panel, flat panel, beaded panel, and board and batten. Shiplap is also a popular wainscoting style, which is slightly different than traditional wainscoting. Talk to our team at Raphan Paint and Finish Co. to determine which style is best for you!

Wainscoting, simply put, is wood paneling that is added to the bottom third or bottom half of a wall to give the space a unique look. Beyond the cosmetic appeal, it is used to protect the bottom half or third of a wall, which is most susceptible to damage due to chairs, foot traffic, or moving heavy objects. Crown moulding is installed at the top corner of a wall where it meets the ceiling, and gives the room more definition. Trim, or baseboards, are typically found along the ground, and usually measure 3 inches or less tall. They share the same conceptual logic as wainscoting, and are meant to protect the very bottom of a wall from damage.

There are many different things you can make trim, moulding, and wainscoting out of. Traditionally, all are made out of wood, however, wood is typically a much more expensive material than other alternatives. MDF (medium density fiberboard) is a much cheaper option, although it typically doesn’t last as long. You can also see trim or moulding made out of rubber, foam, or polyurethane. The different materials aren’t necessarily better or worse, they are simply better utilized in different spaces depending on it’s application and intended use. For example, hospitals prefer rubber baseboards as they are more sanitary and easier to clean.
