Repairing Texture and Drywall

Installing Texture and Drywall

Before beginning a repair, we must prepare our working area. We will lay down drop cloths and cover or move any nearby furniture. We will also give the surrounding area of the repair a quick wipe down to clear dust and debris.

The process begins by creating a patch out of drywall to fill the existing hole. We then scribe that patch onto the project surface to trim the existing drywall so the patch sits in the hole uniformly. If a patch was saved from the hole being cut intentionally, by an electrician, for example, we will simply trim the drywall on the wall so the hole can accommodate additional drywall compound. This will result in a more consistent finish.

Once the hole and patch are properly prepared, we will add wooden shims into the drywall hole, and secure with screws. This provides strength to the patch, and allows the patch to sit flush and in-line with the existing wall.

We will now secure the patch to the wooden shims we added in the previous step. Once this is complete, we will examine the patch to confirm it sits flush, and give a light sanding to any loose fibers of drywall paper.

Now, the wall is ready to be finished. We will apply drywall compound to the gaps along the patch, and in many cases use mesh to strengthen the joints. Once the compound dries, we will sand and reapply the compound in multiple thin layers until the patch is flush with the wall. If the wall has texture, we will apply texture to the patched area in order to blend the patch back in with the existing wall.

Once the project surface is now ready, we will prime and paint the patch to match the existing wall. While patching is never a 100% match to the original drywall, after we add paint it should be difficult to discern where the patching occurred.

Our work is complete! Before we remove the preparation work, we will walk the project with you to ensure that you are satisfied with our work, and cover some best practices with you on how to maximize the life of your paint.

After the final walkthrough, we will remove all of our prep work, and do a final wipe down and vacuum of the project area. Much like the U.S Forestry Service, we practice a “leave no trace” approach to our job sites. We will ensure that we leave your home or business without any evidence we were even there, except for a wall with no holes in it, of course!

Before beginning our work, we must prepare our working area. We will lay down drop cloths and cover or move any nearby furniture. We will also give the surrounding area of the repair a quick wipe down to clear dust and debris.

We start by planning how we will lay the drywall, based off the type of drywall and it’s location. We will inspect all wood studs to confirm they are clean and there are no obstructions embedded into the wood.

We will start installing the drywall according to manufacturer instructions and building codes. We will cut holes when installing for outlets and switches.

Once all the drywall has been properly installed, we will apply joint tape and compound to all of the seams in the drywall, as well as to the screw holes we created. We will then sand and reapply the compound in a few thin layers to create a uniform finish. We will then prime the walls to prepare it for texture and/or paint.

After priming, the walls are ready for the finishing touches. If we are texturing the walls, we will complete that step first, before applying paint. We will typically need at least two coats, and will inspect after the second coat to determine if additional is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, not in all cases. Fortunately, we offer remote consultations for all drywalling and texturing repair. Our team will be able to determine if the hole needs a drywall patch, or if it can be mended with patching compound and mesh tape. Mending without a full drywall patch requires less time and is more cost efficient for you, and we can still finish, texture, and paint it for you to achieve as hidden of a patch as possible.

Texturing your walls is a mostly cosmetic decision, but there are some things to consider. Textured walls typically trap more dust due to it’s three-dimensional nature, so it will need to be cleaned more often. However, texturing walls are generally considered more durable than flat finished walls, so they will hold up better under normal wear-and-tear. If you are doing a fresh drywall installation, texturing walls can be cheaper than flat finished walls, as it is less time consuming to complete versus getting drywall perfectly flat. There is no right or wrong way to go, it just depends what factors will benefit your home or business the most.

There are tons of different textures out there, with many different application methods. If you are unsure, you can give us a call. With a few photos, we can tell you what type of texture you have and how that texture is typically applied.

Absolutely. We can remove any texture from your walls or ceilings to help flat finish them. One of the most popular requests we get is removing popcorn ceilings, which can really modernize your space.

We work with asbestos-laden popcorn ceilings. Before removing any popcorn ceilings, we will test to see if your ceiling contains asbestos. If it does, we will ensure we take the proper steps to prepare our work space, keeping you and your family safe and healthy. When handled correctly, asbestos is not dangerous, and can be removed permanently from your home.
