Our Process

Below you will find a comprehensive breakdown of our residential and commercial staining and refinishing process. We believe consistency and attention to detail are the most important factors in completing an amazing project, so we want to give you a window into how we ensure both factors are met at a high level!

When it comes to high quality staining, preparation is 90% of the work. We will tape and plastic the surrounding areas you don’t want to get any stain or refinishing products on.

Depending on the surface we are staining or refinishing, we will use sanding and stripping techniques to remove any existing finishes and prep the project surface to receive product. If the project surface is untreated, we will simply prep the surface to soak up as much product as possible.

Depending on the surface we are staining or refinishing and it’s condition, we will apply a sealant to protect the surface and to create a smooth base for stain or paint to stick to. This will also fill in minor cracks or holes to make the surface more uniform.

This is the fun part where the rubber meets the road, or in this case where the applicator meets the project surface! We will apply the product to the project surface per manufacturer instructions, taking care to apply thin, even coats to maximize uniformity

The final step is to apply a wood finish to seal in the product and to protect the surface from traffic and from the elements. Depending on the location and product, multiple thin layers are sometimes required

Once we have completed our work, we will complete a final walkthrough with you so you are confident with our work before we remove our preparation materials. We will also discuss best practices with you in order to maximize the life of your new project surfaces!

After the final walkthrough, we will remove all of our prep work, and do a final wipe down and vacuum of the project area. Much like the U.S Forestry Service, we practice a “leave no trace” approach to our job sites. We will ensure that we leave your business without any evidence we were even there, except for the freshly refinished project surfaces, of course!

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of our most frequently asked questions regarding interior and exterior residential and commercial staining and refinishing in Austin, Texas. If you still have questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call, we are here to help!

The short answer is it’s up to you, depending on the look you want to give your project surface. Stains are semi-transparent, so you will be able to see the wood grain through the color of the stain. Older solid wood looks amazing when stained, as the wood grain itself is the main character of the story. If you don’t want the wood grain to be as visible, you can use either a solid-color stain, or using a paint made specifically for wood.

This question typically comes up in relation to decks, but is relevant to any piece of wood. When wood is purchased from suppliers, it is often varying levels of wet, from kinda damp to downright waterlogged. Wood functions much like a sponge. When staining surfaces, it is important that the wood is dry, or else it won’t soak up any stain, much like a wet sponge versus a dry sponge. On decks, that can be anywhere from 8 weeks to 12 months, depending on the type of wood used. If you are unsure if your wood can be stained, give us a call!

It depends on the climate. Austin is a high-humidity area, so we typically recommend 48 hours before walking on newly stained and finished floors. We recommend waiting at least 3 days before moving furniture back into the room to really give the finish time to cure. We will advise you when it is safe to do so after completing your project!

Decks and floors have different life spans due to their varying exposure to the elements. Typically, floor stains will last anywhere from 7 to 10 years, depending on the amount of traffic the floor experiences, and the amount of sunlight the floors receive. Decks, on the other hand, are much shorter, due to their direct exposure to the elements. It is best to have a deck refinished every 2 to 3 years. By regularly refinishing your floors and decking, you can help prolong the life of the wood, saving you thousands in the long run.
